Chabalala: I Don’t Understand Mhango’s Omission

With four appearances in Orlando Pirates’ DStv Premiership campaign, Gabadinho Mhango is heading for the worst season since joining the club if things don’t improve for him in the remaining matches.

Mhango has played just 132 minutes of football in Pirates’ league campaign from four matches this season.

Last season, the Malawian international amassed 22 appearances under the club’s former coach Josef Zinnabuer and scored five goals, while his best season ever in Bucs’ colours was his very first in the 2019/20 campaign after he scored 16 goals from 28 appearances.

There has been a lot of talk in the fraternity in recent months about Mhango’s absence from the line-ups under Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids especially after the 29-year-old’s impressive Africa Cup of Nations with his national team and speaking to the Siya crew former Pirates defender Tonic Chabalala has disapproved the striker’s consistent omissions.

“If I were to coach Pirates, I would prioritise playing players based on their performances in training because at the end of the day it would be me whose job would be on the line if results were not coming the team’s way. Some of the things I see at the club from a distance are not sitting well with me and I wish that players are selected on merit. Let me give you an example of Gabadinho Mhango who is not playing, and I don’t understand the logic behind his omission,” said Chabalala.

“I hear stories of discipline and all of that but for me I wouldn’t care as a coach about the player’s discipline away from the team and I would judge them based on performance in what I see in training. It’s so frustrating to hear coaches talking about building because we have been building all the time. Until when we will be building? It’s so frustrating. For me, whoever is performing in training should be selected for matches,” the former centre-back added.

Gordon Igesund reflects on his Bafana Bafana journey and time as the national team coach.
