Mhango Opens Up On Historical Pirates Debut Season

Absa Premiership top goalscorer Gabadinho Mhango opened up on how he used his doubters as motivation to enjoy his best season ever!

When Mhango signed for Orlando Pirates from Bidvest Wits at the start of the season, the move was met with some degree of scepticism by Bucs fans. After all, the Malawian was no proven goalscorer, his best ever goal return in a season was nine goals, a feat he achieved at Wits as well as Golden Arrows.

Pirates have also been yearning for a proven striker in their ranks. Besides Tendai Ndoro who scored 12 goals in the 2016/17 season, no striker has managed to score more than 10 goals in the last 15 seasons!

However, Mhango smashed all the records in his way as he claimed the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot alongside Peter Shalulile on 16 strikes and speaking to Pirates’ official website ‘Gaba’ reveals how the doubters fuelled his ambitions.

“When I joined the Club, I read some comments on social media about me,” said Mhango. “Some people were saying, why sign Mhango, we need a goal scorer not Mhango, and stuff like that. Obviously as players we try as much as possible to avoid reading negative comments but sometimes it’s impossible to ignore them. But, I believe in myself and that is why I never allowed the negative voices to get into my head,” he said.

The 27-year-old also shared that he arrived at the Soweto giants with a specific goal in mind and is more than pleased that he managed to surpass it in his first season with the club.

“Before the season started my target was to score 15 goals. I always believed that I have the ability to score goals and I did just that, but credit must also go to my teammates. I am not alone out there on the field; I have quality players around me who made this all possible,” Mhango added.
