Makaringe’s Start At Bucs – No Chances Created, Forward Passing Down

Fortune Makaringe was a high-profile signing for Orlando Pirates, after joining from Maritzburg United. His first three games in the PSL are yet to yield a victory or even a goal, as the player continues to settle in at the club.

Position used

So far, Makaringe has played in three different positions for Orlando Pirates, including as a number ten, as a central midfielder, and as a left wingback. He showed his versatility at times for Maritzburg United, but in the 2017/18 season, he was almost always the defensive midfielder, and in the 2018/19 season, he was mostly used as a box-to-box midfielder. Pirates have shifted him around, perhaps delaying his settling-in process.

Attacking

Going forward, Makaringe is yet to register an assist with Pirates in his limited game-time. Last season, he created 11 goals for Maritzburg United. He had an incredible 43% shot accuracy with Maritzburg last season and created 1.39 chances per 90 minutes.

In his three starts for Pirates, Makaringe has so far hit the target with just 25% of his four shots and is yet to create a chance in 247 minutes on the pitch.

Passing

Since joining Pirates, Makaringe’s forward passing accuracy has dropped from his previous club. The 26-year-old is averaging just 59% success rate for his forward passing at Pirates, having had 64% accuracy at Maritzburg. He was making 14.3 forward passes per game at the Team of Choice, but is now making 17.9 per 90 minutes, showing that he is trying to be more progressive at his new club.

Defending

At Maritzburg, Makaringe averaged 2.36 tackles per 90 minutes. So far at Pirates, he has improved that to 2.9 tackles per 90. Aerially, he won 41.3% of his duels last season, whereas he is winning 37.8% this campaign.

These stats show that Makaringe is struggling to impact games going forward, certainly compared to his impressive 11 assists last season. His forward passing accuracy has dropped, and he is yet to create a chance for a teammate. Defensively, he is doing well though at Pirates and making more tackles.
