Davids: Pirates Need To Unlock 'Defensive' Stellies

Orlando Pirates' assistant coach Fadlu Davids says his side will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Stellenbosch in a DStv Premiership clash at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers, started of their 2020/21 campaign with a 1-0 win over Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarter finals, but struggled to build on that winning start in the league when they drew 1-1 against a determined AmaZulu in Durban.

Now, the Buccaneers set their sights on Stellies, a side who gave them a hard time last season, beating Pirates in the first round, while the Soweto giants got their revenge on the last day of the league with a 1-0 win.

Ahead of the match, Pirates’ assistant coach Fadlu Davids has outlined what his side needs to do if they are to get maximum points against the Western Cape outfit.

“Coming into Stellenbosch, it’s always a well-drilled organized defensive structure with five at the back. (they are) really aggressive in their zone too. One of the most organized teams defensively, so it’s really about us to unlock this defensive lock, to unlock this deep lying zone one block and to score goals,” Davids said speaking via the club’s media channels.

Meanwhile the former Maritzburg United coach has revealed his satisfaction with the way Pirates’ new players have adjusted to the team’s methods and suggests it is only a matter of time before it yields results.

“There’s positives to take from the first two games. Not the result we wanted in the last match, but the new players are starting to understand, gelling with the teammates, getting to understand our movements, non-verbal communication between each other, knowing exactly where to be on the pitch in defence and in attack. The fluidity is coming, we saw in the second half, now it’s just about finalising that chances we created to be able to score goals,” Davids added.

Pirates could be without Wayde Jooste, who will undergo a late fitness test, while the club confirmed that Collins Makgaka, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Bongani Sam are all unavailable for the clash.

Kick off for the match is at 19:30.
