Clinical Pirates End Stellies' Unbeaten Run

Orlando Pirates got back to winning ways and became the first side to beat Stellenbosch in the DStv Premiership after a resounding 3-0 win on Wednesday evening.

Venue: Dani Craven Stadium

Pirates made two changes to the side that drew with Golden Arrows, as Ben Motshwari made a long awaited return in place of the suspended Abel Mabaso and Terrence Dzvukamanja was recalled in place of Linda Mntambo.

After lively opening from both sides, Collins Makgaka broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a first-time finish at the near post after a cushioned header by Deon Hotto.

Hotto quickly doubled the dead for the Soweto giants two minutes later after he won possession from Robyn Johannes to clear on goal and fire a low strike past shot-stopper Sage Stephens.

The Buccaneers were denying Stellies the space to play out from the back with a high press and that put them in control, as Steve Barker's charges struggled to get behind the visitors' defence with the pace of Du Preeze.

Pirates had a dream start in the second stanza after Hotto made it 3-0 three minutes from the restart with a powerful strike into the roof of the net after a through ball by Makgaka.

The visitors were comfortable and they could afford to bring on young striker Boitumelo Radiopane in the 68th minute in place of another young forward Ghanaian Kwame Peprah.

However, the Buccaneers found the back of the net 15 minutes before time after Olisa Ndah toe-poked a strike from a rebound after Stephens initially parried away his header but the goal was somehow disallowed.

Stellies had the momentum of the wind in the dying minutes and Junior Mendieta was denied a consolation goal by the crossbar after looping a strike from range but Pirates were already out of sight, as they ended the hosts' unbeaten run with a cleansheet.
