Forgotten Man Nets Late Winner For Pirates

DStv Premiership

Result: Orlando Pirates 2-1 SuperSport United

Date: 21 November 2020

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Tshegofatso Mabaso came to Orlando Pirates' rescue on Saturday evening, as the Buccaneers defeated SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium.

Pirates were unchanged from the win over Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 while Matsatsantsa were boosted by the return of Sipho Mbule, Luke Fleurs and Grant Kekana.

United were on the front foot early on as  Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring in sixth minute with a toe-poked finish inside the box after reacting the quickest to a ball back in the area.

The hosts were working their way back into the game and Pule had a chance to level matters in the 20th minute with a volley just inside the box that sailed over the bar.

SuperSport defened deep and in numbers in the closing phase of the first stanza, with the Buccaneers struggling to carve out any chances in the final third.

Lapasa brought Pirates back in the game five minutes into the second stanza with with a powerful low strike from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Siyabonga Nhlapo.

The match was opened up after that and Lepasa came close to giving Josef Zinnbauer's charges the lead in the last 20 minutes with a glancing header at the near post that missed narrowly wide.

Bradley Grobler had a good chance to snatch the winner for United in the last five minutes after a cross by Ghampani Lungu towards the far post but he could not capitalise, as he took a heavy touch before goalkeeper Richard Ofori cleared danger.

Pirates eventually snatched the winner in the last three minutes after a miscommunication between Fleurs and shot-stopper Ronwen Williams allowed Mabasa finished to fire into an empty net to seal three points on his first appearance of the season.
