Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the DStv Premiership log after thrashing Orlando Pirates 3-0 on Sunday afternoon
Pirates made two changes from their 1-0 defeat to Enyimba, as Thulani Hlatshwayo and Deon Hotto returned to bolster the side while the Brazilians were boosted by the return of Peter Shalulile and Ricardo Nascimento.
The hosts had a chance to get an early lead in just the second minute with a free-kick just outside the box, although Vincent Pule's dipping strikewas smothered by goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
The Buccaneers were playing with numbers behind the ball, but nearly profited from a counter-attack in the 23rd minute as Innocent Maela came close to breaking the deadlock with a pile-driver from range that was saved by Onyango.
Ntsikelelo Nyauza denied Sundowns a big chance two minutes before the break with a timely clearance to deny Themba Zwane inside the six-yard box, which proved to the visitors' only real opening at in the final third.
Josef Zinnbauer's charges were on the front foot coming from the break but they were caught on a counter-attack just before the hour-mark, as Shalulile volleyed a strike from Aubrey Modiba's cross that hit Maela's hand inside the box and the Brazilians were awarded a penalty, which Nascimento converted to open the scoring.
Both sides were forced into substitutions after the hour mark, as Modiba went down injured for Sundowns and he was replaced by Lyle Lakay while three minutes later Pule also succumbed to injury for Pirates and Zinnbauer took the opportunity to bring on striker Tshegofatso Mabasa.
However, Shalulile doubled the lead for Masandawana in the last 14 minutes with a strike past Sandilands in a one-on-one after a costly error by Hlatshwayo, who was dispossessed of the ball by Gift Motupa trying to play from the back.
Lakay sealed the deal for Sundowns in the last ten minutes making it 3-0 with a stunning curling free-kick from the edge of the box that came off the inside of the near post before going over the line.
Lebohang Maboe should have made it 4-0 for the Brazilians in the last minute after going clear on goal on the right side of the box but he it the upright as Masandawana won 3-0 in the end to reclaim top spot.
