Lacklustre Pirates Drop To Sixth After Stalemate

DStv Premiership

Result: Orlando Pirates 0-0 Golden Arrows

Date: 20 January 2021

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Stadium.Orlando Pirates dropped to sixth spot in the DStv Premiership after playing to a goalless draw against Golden Arrows.

Richard Ofori returned from injury to replace Wayne Sandilands between the sticks for Pirates while Happy Jele, Bongani Sam, Thabang Monare and Terrence Dzvukamanja were all handed starts.

The Buccaneers started at a quick pace and had a goal disallowed for offside barely a minute inside the first stanza after a scramble on the goal-line.

However, Josef Zinnbauer's charges were struggling to get behind the Arrows' defence after that, with the visitors getting a lot of turnovers on counter-attacks but they lacked the final pass in the last third.

Thembinkosi Lorch was unlucky not to give the hosts the lead ten minutes before the break with a header that crashed against the upright from Sam's inch-perfect cross.

While Pirates dominated, Mandla Ncikazi's troops hardly a touch of the ball in the second half as Ofori enjoyed a quiet opening half on his return to action.

The Buccaneers lacked the attacking threat in the early phase of the second stanza, which convinced Zinnbauer to make a double change on the hour-mark by bringing on Gabadinho Mhango and Deon Hotto in place of Lorch and Sam.

The visitors were finding chances inside the Pirates box in the last 20 minutes but they lacked the quality to test shot-stopper Ofori.

Pule Mmodi came close to snatching the winner for Arrows in the last five minutes with a strike from range that missed the top corner by a whisker.

Hotto thought he had found the clinching goal for the Buccaneers three minutes before time after finding the back of the net from a through ball but the goal was disallowed for offside, as the sides were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
