Bucs Crash Out Of Confed Cup After Emphatic Loss

CAF Confederation Cup

Result: Raja Casablanca 4-0 Orlando Pirates (5-1 agg.)

Date: 23 May 2021

Venue: Stade Mohamed V

Orlando Pirates' CAF Confederation Cup journey came to an end after a 4-0 loss at the hands of Raja Casablanca on Sunday evening.

Pirates were boosted by the return to the line-up of their talisman Thembonkosi Lorch, alongside recalls for Innocent Maela, Paseka Mako and Thabang Monare from the 1-1 draw in the first-leg.

The Buccaneers had a big chance to go ahead and get an away goal in the sixth minute after Siphesihle Ndlovu broke clear on goal from a counter-attack but his low shot was saved by shot-stopper Anas Zniti.

Immediately thereafter, Raja went ahead courtesy of a towering header into the top corner by Ben Malango from Omar Arjoune's cross.

After Deon Hotto squandered a chance on 14 minutes, Pirates were punished again eight minutes later as Zakaria El Wardi tapped home a cut-back by Soufiane Rahimi to double the hosts' lead.

It got worse after 31 minutes as Rahimi raced clear on goal from his own half and fired past Wayne Sandilands with the help of a deflection to Raja out of sit.

Five minutes later, Malanga completed his brace with a neat finish from close-range to put the hosts four goals up at the interval.

The Soweto giants were struggling to break down a the Green Eagles' reinforced defence, alhough Mhango did go close with a header that forced Raja shot-stopper Anas Zniti into a good save.

With the writing on the wall in the closing stages, Lorch also withdrawn in the last eight minutes and replaced by Kabelo Dlamini for fresh legs in attack.

In the end, the Morrocan side had already done the damage in the first and setup a semi-final meeting with Egyptian side Pyramids FC with a whopping 5-1 aggregate win.
