A move to Europe for Thembinkosi Lorch will remain a distant dream if his agent Jazzman Mahlakgane has his way.
The respected player agent has insisted that with his Orlando Pirates client currently dealing with personal matters and struggling for form, discussing the possibility of going aboard would only prove to be “destructive”.
Earlier last month, the reigning Footballer of the Season was arrested - and later released on bail - following charges of domestic violence, and the club confirmed its own investigation into the matter.
“In my opinion, this overseas thing is overrated – and I say this unapologetically. Nobody takes their bag, gets to the airport and on a flight to go overseas to play. I have taken a lot of flak for not taking players overseas,” Mahlakgane told journalists.
“When I look at the recent era of overseas moves in the country, it has been nothing else but destruction. It hasn’t been one of those where a player goes abroad and makes it big, I find it to be so destructive. I took (Tefu) Mashamaite to Sweden when he was at his peak at Kaizer Chiefs, and you know what happened. Then ‘Shabba’ (Siphiwe Tshabalala) was doing very well at Chiefs and he got an opportunity to go to Turkey. We know what happened and we will call a press conference about his future.”
Lorch has openly discussed his wish to play abroad, but told the media last year that offers for his services were rejected by Pirates – perhaps because they did not match the club’s valuation of one of their key assets.
“The conversation I am having with Lorch now is about re-establishing ourselves. He won the Footballer of the Season and then things dropped after that, maybe it was the noise about going overseas,” his agent explained.
“We are working hard to bring him back up again, the fact that there was this noise was because he was playing well. Right now it’s just pollution – everyone knows he is not doing well at the moment. I am not sure if he goes overseas where will he be going and what will he be trading. Will he be appreciated? We are dealing with personal matters at the moment, but we are also looking at the football side and saying we should organise ourselves better because we want to start afresh.”
