There was a first-ever league start for Bongani Sam in the Pirates defence, while coach Josef Zinnbauer went with the attacking trio of Lorch, Mhango and Luvuyo Memela.

The Buccaneers got off to the perfect start as Lorch caught the Highlands defence napping by latching onto a long pass before skillfully firing past Kyle Peters for his first goal of the campaign.

Pirates had their second goal four minutes later as Luckyboy Mokoena's back-pass was intercepted by Mhango, who rounded Peters to slot into an empty net for his 12th league goal of the season.

The Lions of the North, meanwhile, had no answer for the Soweto giants pace upfront as the likes of Memela, Lorch and Mhango continued to threaten as they went search of more goals.

Highlands had a couple sights at goal in the latter stages of the first half, but it was Pirates who managed to bag a third goal just before the break though Paseka Mako's powerful finish from the edge of the box.

The Buccaneers had been guilty of slacking off in the second half in recent matches, but that was not the case this time around as they continued pushing for more goals.

Wayne Sandilands was called upon in the 69th minute as the Buccaneers shot-stopper produced a superb reflex save to keep out Ramagalela's glancing header at the near post.

The Lions of the North did manage to pull a goal back on 80 minutes as Mlungisi Mbunjana took possession off Fortune Makaringe before rifling the ball past Sandilands from 25-yards out to set up a nervy final few minutes.

However, Pirates were able to see off a late push from Owen da Gama's charges to hold out for the 3-1 victory, although they remain fifth in the league standings.
