Orlando Pirates defender Abel Mabaso is honoured to wear the jersey number of one of the club’s former stars.
In Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup Group A match, Mabaso was introduced in the second half of their 3-0 win over Libya's Al Ahli Benghazi, wearing jersey number 13, which is one of the retired numbers at the Soweto giants.
Number 13 was the jersey number of former Pirates midfielder Clifford Moleko who tragically passed away in a road accident in the prime of his career in 1998.
At the time, Moleko had been on the books of Seven Stars in Cape Town on loan from Pirates.
Mabaso says it is an honour and a privilege to wear the jersey number 13 for Bucs’ Confederation Cup campaign.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to wear the jersey no. 13 of the late Bab’ Clifford “Double Diff” Moleko for the @CAFCLCC 20/21 edition,” the versatile player wrote on his official Twitter account.
According to CAF rules, all continental tournaments determine the number of registered players to be in numerical order, without using any big numbers beyond the number of recorded players.
