Orlando Pirates midfielder Linda Mntambo grabbed his chance and didn’t disappoint with his performance in his first appearance of the season, after the club’s caretaker coach Rulani Mokwena threw him in the deep end against Stellenbosch FC last weekend.
The former Jomo Cosmos and Chippa United central midfielder combined well with Fortune Makaringe in Pirates’ engine room, and was one of the impressive players as the Buccaneers registered a crucial 1-0 victory and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout.
Mntambo’s change of fortune and impressive performance could go a long way to inspiring other Pirates players currently struggling for game time in the team.
Paseka Mako is another player who made a return to the starting line-up for Bucs against Stellenbosch, after he had only one appearance in the league earlier in the campaign.
While Mntambo and Mako have managed to convince Mokwena that they were ready for their chance and to contribute to the progress of the team, there are no less than 10 other players in the team who are keen to get their opportunity.
The likes of Justice Chabalala, Mthokozisi Dube, Zakhele Lepasa, Abel Mabaso, Asavela Mbekile, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Austin Muwowo, Bongani Sam, Jusin Shonga and Tebogo Tlolane have all struggled for gametime so far this season, though they have been pushing in training and waiting for their chance.
Mokwena has emphasised that all the players have a chance in his team as long as they show eagernness to be competitive and to contribute.
