Despite being on the wrong side of 30 as he will be turning 38 in August, the former Inter Milan and AC Milan player has been linked with a move to the Buccaneers and Egyptian giants Al Ahly respectively, according to reports in Ghanaian media.

The well-travelled player, who is currently on the books of Hearts of Oak in Ghana’s topflight, has previously also been linked with Kaizer Chiefs.

However, the reported potential move to Bucs for the defensive midfielder has been refuted, with sources citing age as the main reason that it is unlikely to happen.

“Look, there have been several reports from Ghana about the supposed potential signing of Sulley Muntari with Pirates but as someone who is based here in South Africa and close to Pirates and familiar with how the club operates, I doubt if there is any truth to those reports. The Pirates I know wouldn’t sign a 37-year-old because as far as I know the club is building for the future and therefore is targeting players who are much younger than that,” said the source.

Contacted for comment, local football agent Sipho Shaven who had been tasked with searching for opportunities for the experienced player in Mzansi as he was returning from Europe three years ago has distanced himself from the Pirates link.

“That is news to me, and I haven’t had any discussions with Pirates about that and therefore I would like to distance myself from those reports,” he said.

Gordon Igesund gives his thoughts on VAR and whether it has the desired impact to improve football.

Pirates is home to the pair of Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori and striker Kwame Peprah and Muntari would link up with his countrymen if he was to join the Soweto giants.
