PSL award nominee Tapelo Xoki has paid tribute to the people he says are behind his impressive form this season which resulted in him getting the recognition of the league.
The AmaZulu centre-back is one of the three players nominated for the Defender of the Season award along with Mamelodi Sundowns’ Mosa Lebusa and Njabulo Ngcobo from Swallows FC.
Xoki, 26, has been one of the top performers for Usuthu in what has been a remarkable season for the team as they have successfully managed to transform from being a relegation-fighting club to a title-chasing side under Benni McCarthy.
The Khayelitsha-born player is crediting his form to McCarthy and his technical team for the changes they have made to the side since their arrival in December.
“First of all, it is such a privilege to be nominated for the Defender of the Season among so many players in the PSL. To be named amongst the best three, because it’s only the three of us for the award, it means a lot to me. It tells me that the work I put in has really shown,” said Xoki, speaking through the Durban-based club’s media department.
“The last season’s episodes and the struggles are far behind me. But they also helped in terms of making sure that I push myself and try and be better as a player. Also, the technical staff that has come in played a huge part in my game. I’ve developed and I’m still developing. I’ve taken in their help as much as I can, and the help of my teammates as well, because as much as I’m nominated, I’m representing all the guys, our defenders in the team. We pride ourselves in unity and in teamwork. It’s not only me, I’m just privileged enough to be standing on behalf of them, it means a lot and I’m grateful for that,” he said.
