Move Abroad Back On For Pirates’ Shonga?

Orlando Pirates striker Justin Shonga is again linked with an exit from the club, something which also made the headlines prior to the start of the current season.

Shonga has had a difficult season regarding game-time, after making only three starts in Pirates’ Absa Premiership campaign thus far.

Under Josef Zinnbauer, since the coach’s arrival at the Soweto giants in December, Shonga has made only one start and one substitute appearance out of five matches.

The Zambian international was left out of both the team’s last two matches, against Mamelodi Sundowns and Highlands Park respectively, after he was an unused substitute against Polokwane City in the fixture prior to that.

Indications from sources in the know are that the 23-year-old has become increasingly frustrated with his lack of game-time, in fear of losing his place in the Zambian national team, where he is one of their leading strikers.

An unnamed club in Turkey is said to be monitoring the situation with the Chipolopolo forward closely, with a view of making an offer to the PSL giants for his services.

“Justin Shonga needs to get more game-time. As things stand, for him to get game-time he needs to get out of Orlando Pirates. So, there’s a possibility that there might be something (a deal) for him in Turkey,” a source revealed to the Siya crew.

Shonga scored eight goals in all competitions in the PSL last season, finishing as the second highest scorer for Bucs in the 2018/19 campaign.

The forward is in his third season with the Buccaneers, having joined the club from Zambian outfit Nkwazi FC in 2017.

“It’s (interest in Shonga) something that the player’s handlers are working on. However, interest in the player is something that is known to Pirates,” concluded the source.

Reports from Egypt in July indicated that a R15 million offer had been made to the Soweto giants, and at the time, it had been revealed that Egyptian giants Al Ahly were keen on signing Shonga.

The forward had also been linked with Tanzanian outfit Simba SC.
