Ex-Downs Youngster Touted For Overseas Move

Attempts are being made to send a former Mamelodi Sundowns youth player abroad as he looks to further his career.

As reported in edition 1198 of Soccer Laduma, Relefilwe Mokeretla could be heading back to Europe for his second spell abroad, if all goes according to plan for his handlers, with the player having previously plied his trade in the French lower leagues for FC Lons.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, has spent time with Bloemfontein Celtic but is now facing an uncertain future at the Mangaung outfit as he doesn’t seem to be in the plans of the first team.

Speaking to the Siya crew, the player’s mentor JJ Sesing has indicated that they are assessing options abroad for the player.

“Relefilwe Mokeretla is a talented youngster who started out at the Sundowns academy and has also been at Maritzburg United when Steve Komphela was the coach (there),” said the player’s mentor.

“When Steve left Maritzburg and some of the young players he had signed for the club were let go, he (Mokeretla) was part of the crew that were let go. But fortunately for him, he got the opportunity in Europe, which was very good for him because he was 19 and turning 20. There was a promise of a contract with a Ligue 1 club in France, but he ended up signing with a lower division club there,” he said.

“He came back and Steve took him back again at (Kaizer) Chiefs for training, but that was when Chiefs was restructuring, and they didn’t sign him. After that, he went to (Black) Leopards and in August/September last year, he went to Celtic, but there’s uncertainty about his future with the club. He is a good player from Sundowns development, and we are working on taking him back overseas,” concluded the mentor.

The Siya crew has learnt that football agent Michael Ngobeni has also been roped in to assist in getting the player the move.
