Following his impressive debut season in Mzansi’s topflight, a Cape Town City player is likely to be given an extended stay with the club.
Having joined the Citizens in August last year as the Mother City outfit sought out a replacement for Darren Keet who had suffered a long-term injury at the time, Hugo Marques quickly made the number one jersey in Eric Tinkler’s team his own.
So far this season, the Portuguese-Angolan international goalkeeper is leading the charts in the DStv Premiership with the most clean sheets at 12 from 24 matches and is ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and Ugandan international goalkeeper Denis Onyango who has 11 clean sheets. Hugo Marques is tied at that number with AmaZulu’s Veli Mothwa.
When he signed with the Citizens, Marques was 35 years old and was offered a one-year contract.
Having impressed with his performances and after playing a pivotal role in leading City to be among the top teams on the log, the club looks set to offer the experienced shot-stopper a contract extension, according to sources in the know, despite having turned 36 in January.
Indications are that the player could be offered another one-year deal to keep him at the club until at least June 2023.
