No Varsity Football For Mafikeng
NWU-Mafikeng were knocked out of the Varsity Football tournament by UP-Tuks in the semifinal stage but won't be back next year to exact revenge as they failed to qualify for USSA Nationals.
The USSA Nationals qualification tournament runs concurrently with Varsity Football and is the first step in getting a spot in the prestigious competition.
Upon qualifying, participating teams play against each other for a Top Eight berth which hands them automatic entry into the Varsity Football tournament.
Due the demand of Varsity Football on a Monday night and USSA National qualifiers on a Tuesday, NWU-Mafikeng had to juggle their squad to allow players adequate game and rest time and were unable to qualify to participate in the National competition.
This means the 2015 edition of Varsity Football will be without the only team to attract an average of 8000 spectators to their home games.
Coach Amos Xabanisa expressed he his sadness as it doesn't only affect his team or their campus but also the football crazy fans who turned up in their thousands at every home game.
"We won't be playing next year as we never qualified for the USSA Nationals. It's sad for the people of Mafikeng to not have any Varsity Football next year but those are the rules," he said.
Despite this, Xabanisa was confident his team will be back with a bang for the 2016 edition as they will only have USSA commitments to worry about.
"We will come back with a bang in 2016. The squad will be stronger and more experienced because most of the players are first year students, so they will still be around in 2016," he added.
