NWU Have A Score To Settle

Having lost to UP-Tuks twice last season, NWU skipper Lebogang Phetlhu has an easy job motivating his side for their trip to Pretoria on Monday.
 
The hard-nosed defender was part of the side that lost their final round robin game against UP-Tuks last year before crashing out in the semifinal to the same opponents a week later, memories which are still fresh in his mind.
 
"Obviously we want revenge, but we need to forget about the past and focus on this game," he said.
 
Phetlhu said that the team learned some valuable lessons from their campaign last year, when they were caught out after making a fast start.
 
"Last year we started on a high note and there was complacency in the team - we thought we had won the tournament before it finished and our peformance dropped off.
 
"We don't want a repeat of that this year and we have worked hard, we will not take anything for granted.
 
"Most of the players where here although only a few were in last year's squad, so they all understand the consequences of complacency," he said.
 
NWU currently top the standings following their 6-0 whipping of UCT, which was their third consecutive win at home in Mafikeng, but Phetlhu warned that the hard work is only just starting.
 
"After the win against UCT I called the players together and said that the competition starts now for us.
 
"Our last five games will be the toughest - we play Tuks, UJ and UFS who are all in the top four and then it is the play-offs," he pointed out.
 
They will have to show that they can do the business away from home as well if they are to finish on top and secure home advantage in the play-offs, but Phetlhu is adamant that this team has what it takes.
 
"We have some quality players, but we are also working hard as a team so I don't think we will struggle, I think we will go all the way," he said.
