NWU Out To Run Riot Of Ikeys
NWU are eyeing their third consecutive win at their home fortress in Mafikeng when they host UCT this evening.
As one of only two sides that remain unbeaten after three rounds of Varsity Football, NWU have a chance of moving to the top of the log if results go their way, whilst by contrast UCT are still looking for their first win.
Although NWU beat UWC and Limpopo at home, neither performance was completely convincing and their coach Amos Xabanisa wants to see his side be more ruthless.
“We have been working on our attacking and finishing tactics the whole week. Our key strategy going into this game is accuracy and speed,” he said.
The fans in Mafikeng are renowned for their passion, and Xabanisa knows that his side owes them a complete performance.
“Our fans have been behind the team all the way .They have been our pillar of strength in the past two home games. We need to reward them with a convincing win,” he added.
Although the Ikeys have only got one point to show for their efforts, they have been competitive in all of their games.
Their coach Rowan Hendricks knows that they are up against a powerful NWU side, but he believes they have what it takes to cause an upset.
“The boys seem to feel and look fresh. We know that NWU will run at us strong. They’re a good ball-playing team, but we have players and mean to deal with that.”
“We are going into this match with an optimistic and risky approach, as the players know that I trust them.
“The players have been working really hard and I can only be thankful and stand back as I watch them give their best. This is their tournament to play, to enjoy themselves and to show UCT that they are true Ikey Warriors,” he said.
