Mngqithi: Why Downs Should Not Panic

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained why there is no need to panic, despite going three matches without a win in the DSTV Premiership.

Sundowns were left heartbroken when Swallows FC’s Musa Nyatama scored late to secure a point for the Dube Birds at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. The game finished 1-1 as both sides held on to their unbeaten runs in the league this season.

Masandawana remain top of the standings on goal difference after 13 matches.

“The equaliser was a sucker punch. And in those five minutes, our players lost character. They started kicking the balls out and not playing, even when they had options around them. That resulted in that stupid foul which result in a goal. But I feel the goal was offside, but the truth of the matter it really felt bad in a game where we feel we had done everything to get a result,” Mngqithi told the media after the game.

“I wouldn’t say it’s that stage where we have to panic and start feeling that we have dropped big points. We were not playing against pushovers. We played against SuperSport and they are up there competing with us. We played against Swallows and they are up there competing with us. We played against an improved Celtic. As Sundowns we would want to win all the matches we play, but I don’t think people need to panic. We are at that stage where we had to play around with a lot of changes in the line-up in all these three matches and that had a negative impact on how we played. I think we are on the right track.

“Maybe one day we will appreciate the points was not as complete as we would have loved because we did not have most of the players who normally play and in all these matches we managed not to lose a game, which is a positive.”
