Throwback Thursday: Chiefs Humbled Again, Wits Victorious
As we celebrate 10 years of the Nedbank Cup, we look at some of the past victories that have taken place and this time it’s over to Bidvest Wits.
Prior to their triumph in the MTN8 this season, the 2009/10 Nedbank trophy was the most recent one in their cabinet having won it under Roger de Sa, with the Clever Boys getting their hands on it back in May 2010.
With neither Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates making it past the quarter-finals, Wits managed to avoid all of the big three en route to their win, beating AmaZulu in the final, thanks to goals from Fabricio da Silva and Sifiso Vilakazi.
The Amakhosi were knocked out by lower league opposition for the second year in a row after FC Cape Town put two goals past them in the Round of 16, while the Buccaneers were knocked out via extra time with Masandawana in the last eight.
Current Buccaneer, Patrick Phungwayo, won the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award that year, while former Mamelodi Sundowns man, Matthew Pattison, was named as the Player of the Tournament.
