Cup Success, Do Or Die For Komphela At Chiefs?
The Nedbank Cup Could Be Steve Komphela's Last Chance At Kaizer Chiefs
It could be make or break for Steve Komphela’s Kaizer Chiefs career this weekend as his side takes on Golden Arrows in search of Nedbank Cup glory.
Since arriving at the club in 2015, Komphela has overseen two and a half barren years with the Amakhosi, missing out on every trophy available as the club went from title-contenders to finishing fifth and fourth over the past two campaigns.
Now, with 10 games left to play, the Glamour Boys are in fourth place and seven points behind league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns. While their lead isn’t unassailable, it does seem unlikely that Chiefs – who have only scored 18 goals this season – will be able to catch them.
Missing out on the 2017/18 Absa Premiership title will mean that Komphela has failed to win any of the last 11 trophies available to him, with the Nedbank Cup his best chance of redemption and possibly his last hope of clinching a new contract.
Komphela will see his current deal with Chiefs expire at the end of the current season, and as things stand it is thought that the club has already started making enquiries about a possible replacement.
As previously reported by the Siya crew, the likes of Luc Eymael and Doctor Khumalo have been touted as successors to Komphela if he doesn’t remain, but there is a chance that a new deal could be on the table if he clinches the Nedbank Cup.
Chiefs host Golden Arrows, a team with one win in their last 16 games, at FNB Stadium this weekend, with Komphela hopeful of seeing his side progress to the next round.
