Chiefs’ Komphela One Step Closer To First Trophy

Steve Komphela Could Still Win The Nedbank Cup With Kaizer Chiefs

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 12, 2018 05:30 PM

Kaizer Chiefs’ Steve Komphela is one step closer to winning his first major trophy as a head coach following the Glamour Boys’ progression in the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs managed a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday night thanks to goals from Erick Mathoho and Leonardo Castro, securing their spot in the quarter-finals – the round in which they were knocked out of last year. They haven’t gotten past the quarter-finals since Komphela’s arrival.

The 50-year-old was very happy to progress, despite the late scare from Steve Barker’s side, and he does still now have a chance of securing a trophy for the first time since his arrival at Naturena.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Komphela said, “We are delighted to progress to the next round… It wasn’t a walk in the park, Stellenbosch came out and really made a fight of it. However, before their goal, we had a couple of chances to bury the match, including Teenage Hadebe’s header. That was a clear-cut chance, but we failed to finish from close range.

“There were a lot of positives to build on, even Castro’s goal came from Parker’s touch. We will take this win to the next match, because after a win, one goes to the next match with less pressure.”

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Thursday night, and Komphela doesn’t seem to be concerned about who could be their next opponent.

“For now we will enjoy this win while staying grounded,” he concluded.

Komphela’s current contract with Chiefs will expire at the end of the current season, and winning the Nedbank could be the difference between him getting a new deal and leaving without a single trophy to his name.

Do you think Chiefs can win the Nedbank Cup?

It is early to say that because we still have eight teams in contention and I believe any of the the teams have equal chance of going all the way to the final.

What a pure waste of data. Just how is this guy a step closer to winning a cup when he failed after 2 finals? He was already eliminated in the quaternary finals of the nedbank cup before, so cowditor just tell me how is SK a step closer to winning a cup after winning against an nfd side to advance to the quaternary finals

He is miles away, The sooner he gets tough oppositions like downs or pirates he is doing down and he will have a hard down fall. He will lose the match and his Job as well! He must just get Ubuntu next NBC game to boast his confidence!

The only thing keeping Komphela at Chiefs, is his English. If Komphela's English was as starved as Kgoloko Thobejane's....Bobby would've long showed him Naturena's exit door.

It has came to the point that Chiefs' fans are now celebrating 70's, 80's and 90's successes. For Chiefs' now....CCL has the same weight as any domestic cup.
