Pirates Edge City In Numbers
Orlando Pirates dominate in midfield areas against Cape Town City
Orlando Pirates will head into Wednesday night’s Nedbank Cup tie edging Cape Town City in the passing and assisting stakes when the two side clash for a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Pirates have won their last five league games as opposed to City who have only managed one win in five.
Central to the Buccaneers’ success has been their passing ability in midfield which has seen them create goals. Pirates currently have a team passing accuracy of 83.8% over City’s 78.6%.
Among the key duels will be that of Bucs attacker Luvuyo Memela against Ayanda Patosi.
Memela has weighed in on his side's success with four assists while Patosi has managed three. Memela has also scored two more goals than his City counterpart, by netting five goals as compared to Patosi’s three league goals.
Pirates have also managed to register impressive numbers from their central midfielders with the likes of Musa Nyatama having a total of 1495 touches over his opposite Thami Mkhize who has had 1310 touches on the ball.
Nyatama’s touches have resulted in a total of 1353 completed passes made to date, edging Mkhize by 293 as the Cape Town City man has amassed 1060 passes in all his games.
Lastly, Memela has also emerged one of the PSL’s biggest threats with a total of 19 shots on target made this season while City’s Lyle Lakay has taken 14 shots on target.
The Park-town-based side travels to the Mother City where they will hope their impressive figures translate into goals in order to progress to the last eight of the cup competition.
The match is set to begin at 19h30 on Wednesday evening.
