Nedbank Cup

Last 16

Full Time: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 EC Bees

Date: 13 March 2018

Venue: Loftus Versfeld Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns fought back from a goal down to beat EC Bees FC 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup last-16 match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sundowns had the first chance on goal in the 10th minute when a cross from the right by Anthony Laffor was met by Jeremy Brockie, but he headed over from 10-yards out under no pressure.
Three minutes later, Laffor created a chance again for Sundowns with another pin-point cross from the right for George Lebese, but he was thwarted point-blank by the goalkeeper, who also denied him on the rebound.
In the 16th minute, Sundowns were made to pay for their missed opportunities when a poor pass from Siyabonga Zulu gifted the ball to Bongani Chikile, who proceeded to drive into the box from the right and, after a fortuitous bounce of the ball, was able to tap into an empty net, 1-0.
Sundowns almost hit back on the half-hour mark when Lebese slipped Themba Zwane through on goal, but he was superbly denied in a one-on-one with the keeper.
The Brazilians tried to find an equaliser before the break, but were unable to penetrate the Bees defence and entered the break trailing 1-0.
A minute into the second half and Sundowns drew level thanks to a 24-yard thunderbolt from Hlompho Kekana which found the corner of the net, 1-1.

Sundowns almost took the lead in the 65th minute when a left-wing cross from Gaston Sirino was met by Thokozani Sekotlong, but his header shaved the wrong side of the woodwork.

In the 76th minute, the Brazilians did find their second goal when some swift play inside the Bees box saw Brockie square for Thapelo Morena to turn home from close range, 2-1.

Bees tried to find their way back into the game after that but they tired and Sundowns held on for the victory which sees the Brazilians into the quarterfinals of the cup competition.
