Baxter's SuperSport Send Chiefs Crashing Out Of Nedbank Cup

Nedbank Cup

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1 (3)- (5)1 SuperSport United

Date: 22 April 2017

Venue: FNB Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs crashed out of the Nedbank Cup after losing 5-3 on penalties to Stuart Baxter's SuperSport United at the FNB Stadium.

There was a good tempo the encounter, although SuperSport looked more threatening with Teboho Mokoena and Thabo Mnyamane seeing a lot of the ball.

Chiefs started growing in the game, as Siphiwe Tshabalala started pulling the strings from the midfielder, although chances were hard to come by.

The first chance of the game arrived after 37 minutes as Thuso Phala played in Reneilwe Letsholonyane, but the former Chiefs midfielder blazed over the crossbar from just inside the box.

It was a frustrating half for both sides, as Letsolonyane's chance proved to be the only bit of goal-mouth action in the opening 45 minutes.

Chiefs had a chance to break the deadlock in the 56th minute when Joseph Molangoane teed up Bernard Parker, who fired just wide from the edge of the box.

SuperSport pushed for an opener and were rewarded in the 72nd minute courtesy of a superb volley from Jeremy Brockie from the edge of the box,

Steve Komphela responded by introducing Gustavo Paez for Sibusiso Khumalo just a minute later, while George Lebese made way for William Twala in the 78th minute.

It was Twala who made the perfect impact, as his cross found Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who towered over Bhasera to head home at the far post in the 81st minute.

However, neither side could find a winning goal in the closing stages, which forced the clash into another 30 minutes of extra time.

Cheifs were awarded a penalty in the 103rd minute Dean Furman was adjudged to have handled in the box. Parker stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Reyaad Pieterse.

The score remained 1-1 at the end of extra-time and the match went into a penalty shoot-out, where Chiefs held their nerve to triumph 5-3 in the shoot-out.

Here's how they lined up:

Chiefs: 32. Khune, 2.Mphahlele, 26. Gordinho, 3. Mathoho, 13. Khumalo, 12. Maluleka, 31. Katsande, 23. Molangoane, 17. Lebese, 14. Tshabalala, 25. Parker.
