Nedbank Cup

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Stellenbosch

Date: 10 March 2018

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs progressed to the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals after beating Stellenbosch FC 2-1 thanks to goals from Erick Mathoho and Leonardo Castro.

Amakhosi looked to patiently build up from the back in the opening 10 minutes while the visitors were not allowing them time and space on the ball in the last third.

It took Eric Mathoho’s aerial power to break the deadlock for the Glamour Boys in the 30th minute as the defender rose the highest inside the box to guide Siphiwe Tshabalala’s corner into the back of the net, 1-0.

Iqraam Rayners had a glorious chance to find a reply for the Mother City club seven minutes before time after going clear on goal but he blasted his strike over the bar on a half-volley.

Tshabalala had a chance to extend Chiefs' lead just before the break, but the veteran midfielder ballooned his effort over the crossbar before Bernard Parker forced Washington Arubi into fine save moments later.

Joseph Molangoane should have punished the visitors on the hour-mark after going clear on goal on the right side of the box and rounding Washington Arubi but he hit the outside of the post with the net gaping.

Leonardo Castro made it 2-0 for Steve Komphela’s charges in the 65th minute with an unstoppable strike from the right side of the box that rifled in at the near post, giving Arubi no chance.

Alan Robertson pulled a goal back for Barker’s men 15 minutes before time with a glancing header at the near post following a corner, 2-1.

However, the AmaKhosi managed to see out the rest of the half to secure the win and sealed their spot in the last eight.
