Nedbank Cup Report: Baroka FC v Steenberg United 10 March 2018
Teams: Baroka 2-0 Steenberg United
Date: 10 March 2018
Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium
Baroka FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup after defeating Steenberg United 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Steenberg looked organised in the opening exchanges and in the first 10 minutes they were not afraid to go forward as they enjoyed more possession.
Macdonald Makhubedu’s charges studied their movements and only went forward when they see gaps on the counter.
Mpho Kgaswane almost opened the scoring for Bakgaga in the 21st minute with a well struck left footed shot from just outside the box but it missed narrowly wide.
The Mother City club were beginning to show cracks at the back with 10 minutes of the first stanza remaining as they were always caught on counter-attacks.
Steenberg were punished two minutes before halftime with Gift Motupa raiding the left wing before picking out Madzungo Sidumo, who had a simple task of tapping into an empty net.
The hosts looked more in control of the match in the opening 10 minutes of the second half although United still asked questions going forward.
Kgaswane was unlucky on the hour-mark for the home side after his strike from inside the box was cleared off the line following a square ball from Sidumo.
Sidumo should have got his brace for Bakgaga in the 72nd minute after going through on the right side of the box but he rushed his move and his strike came off the corner of the crossbar.
However, Tebogo Sodi sealed the win for the home side in the 84th minute as he turned home Motupa's cross at the far post to clinch their spot in the quarterfinals.
