Cosmos Send Wits Crashing Out Nedbank Cup

Nedbank Cup Last 16

Result: Jomo Cosmos 0 (5) - (4) 0 Bidvest Wits

Date: 04 April 2017

Venue: Taskane Stadium

Bidvest Wits were dumped out of the Nedbank Cup, after losing 5-4 on penalties to NFD outfit, Jomo Cosmos on Tuesday evening.

Despite fielding a number of fringe players, Gavin Hunt's charges took control from the onset, although they struggled to create chances.

Wits carved out their first real opening after 21 minutes when Mogakolodi Ngele did well to pick out Cuthbert Malajila, who headed wide of the upright from close range.

However, Cosmos broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime as Linda Mntambo volleyed home from 12-yards out after a fine individual run from Matsilelele Sono.

Gavin Hunt would not have been pleased heading into break, after his side dominated for most of the opening 45 minutes, while Malajila also squandered two chances.

Wits opted for a double change at the start of the second half, as Jabulani Shongwe and Ejike Uzoenyi made way for Daine Klate and Phakamani Mahlambi.

Mahlambi caused a few problems down the flank upon his arrival, which prompted Jomo Sono to make a double change of his own in the 59th minute as Ananias Gebhardt and Thato Sithole were introduced.

Wits eventually leveled matters in the 65th minute as Ngele headed home from close range after getting on the end of Klate's corner.

The Clever Boys pushed for a winning goal as the half went on but were dealt a blow in the 82nd minute when Klate was forced off with an injury. He was replaced Elias Pelembe.

However, neither side could get a winning goal in the closing stages, forcing the game into extra-time.

The 30 minutes of extra-time proved to be a quiet affair, as both clubs struggled to carve out clear-cut chances and the match was to be decided by a shoot-out, where Cosmos held their nerve to claim the win in sudden death.

Here's how they lined up:

Cosmos: Modiba, Nsabiyumva, Thompson (Gebhardt 59'), Lebahi, Mntambo, Makobela, Lingwati, Sono, Haoseb, Maluleke (Sithole 59'), Macuphu (Madonsela 115').

Wits: Josephs, Gaxa, Khumalo, Hlanti, Mkhwanazi, Shongwe (Klate 46', Pelembe 82'), Ntshangase, Myeni, Ngele, Uzoenyi (Mahlambi 46'), Malajila.
