Chippa Suffer First Giant Killing Act In Nedbank Cup

Chippa United became the first big casualty in the Nedbank Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to GladAfrica Championship side University of Pretoria on Friday afternoon.

Nedbank Cup Last 32

Result: University of Pretoria 2-0 Chippa United

Date: 04 February 2022

Venue: ABSA Tuks Stadium

The Chilli Boys made only two changes to the side that last played against Sekhukhune United in the league, as they handed new signings, Ronald Pfumbidzai and Vernon Campher their debuts while AmaTuks also gave new recruit Thabang Sibanyoni his debut.

Chippa had a bright start, as Veluyeke Zulu forced a save out of goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa from a header in the second minute but play was halted in the 16th minute, with both set of players and match officials heading for the tunnel due lightning and bad weather.

Play resumed after a long stoppage and Etiosa Ighodaro came close to breaking the deadlock for the hosts in the 19th minute with header that missed narrowly wide after a cross by Ayanda Mvambi.

Here are the latest PSL deals to have taken place in the last few weeks:

However, the game got scrappy in the closing phase of the first stanza, with not much goal-mouth action taking place as the sides went to the half-time break still deadlocked.

Both sides were creating chances in the early stages of the second stanza but they lacked the finishing touches, which prompted the Chilli Boys to make a change just before the hour-mark, as new signing Siphelele Luthuli replaced Thokozani Sekotlong.

Tlesane Motaung's charges were gaining the upper hand in the latter stages, as Lulama Maqoko eventually broke the deadlock ten minutes before time with a close-range header after a cross by Siyanda Msane.

Kamogelo Pheeane quickly doubled the lead for AmaTuks a minute later with a low strike from outside the box that found the bottom corner, which sealed their spot in the in the round of 16.
