Throwback Thursday: Chiefs Shocked, When Swallows Flew
We’re celebrating 10 years of the Nedbank Cup in South Africa, and it’s sad to look back at when Moroka Swallows – now down the divisions – had it in their grasp.
The once mighty Dube Birds, thanks to Vinicius da Silva, managed to go all the way in the tournament in 2009 as Julio Leal guided them to victory against a University of Pretoria side that defied all the odds to get into the final.
Tuks were beaten 1-0 by Swallows in the showpiece game, however they made sure they took some top-flight scalps on the way there as players such as Andile Jali, Phenyo Mongala and Mthokosizi Yende helped them beat Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and Ajax Cape Town.

The victory over Chiefs, in a real David vs Goliath bout, was probably the most impressive, with the club twice coming from behind before scoring a late winner in the Round of 16.
Before beating the Pretoria-based outfit, Swallows swept past Bidvest Wits, Peace Lovers, Maritzburg United and Black Leopards on the way to Rand Stadium, and finished the job thanks to their man from Brazil, Da Silva.
South Africa’s other big boys, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, were both knocked out in the Round of 16 by Celtic and Platinum Stars, with Thulani Serero, Thabo Mongalo, Mark Haskins and Mongala sharing the golden boot with three goals each.
