Komphela: I’ll Throw My Medals Away…
Kaizer Chiefs' Steve Komphela Won't Mount Any Medal He Wins
Steve Komphela says that, if Kaizer Chiefs manage to win a trophy this season, he won’t be mounting his medal on the wall for all to see.
The Amakhosi still have a mathematical – though slim – chance of challenging for the Absa Premiership title, and on Saturday will battle it out with Baroka for a spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.
While Komphela is yet to win a trophy with the Glamour Boys, he remains hopeful that they can finish the season on a high note prior to the expiration of his current contract at Naturena.
Speaking to the media today, he said, “We never give in or give up... Optimists will say it’s possible, and pessimists will say that it is over.
“I would love to see the players win something for the supporters, and God willing, if all that happens, then I don’t think that you’ll come to my place and see a medal or whatever. I throw those things away myself. You could play in an MTN8, win three matches and put your medal on the wall, and it’s a great achievement in terms of perception, but what did you leave?
“For some of us, work is within, not outside. Achievement within is admissible but massive.”
Chiefs take on Baroka at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening at 20h15.
