Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have won 21 of the 43 Nedbank Cup finals that have taken place since 1971, however one will not make the Round of 16 this year.
The fourth and final competitive Soweto Derby of the 2015/16 season takes place this weekend at FNB Stadium as the Amakhosi take on the Buccaneers in the Nedbank Cup for the first time since the 2006 final.
Chiefs’ most recent win – their 13th – in the tournament came in the 2012/13 season under Stuart Baxter when the Glamour Boys beat SuperSport United, while Pirates’ most recent victory came the following season when they lifted the trophy for the eighth time after beating Bidvest Wits 3-1.
Last season, Baxter’s Chiefs were knocked out in the Round of 16 by NFD side, Black Leopards, while Pirates went out at the same stage at the hands of SuperSport.
The last Nedbank Cup meeting of the Soweto giants, in 2006, saw both sides battle it out but fail to score, with the Amakhosi claiming victory only after a penalty shootout had taken place. Given the amount of draws in this fixture of late, this weekend may be a similar situation.
Now, with Steve Komphela and Eric Tinkler set to cross swords this weekend, both sets of fans will be hoping for not only a place in the Last 16, but also bragging rights until next season.
