SuperSport United was crowned champions of the 2017 Nedbank Cup competition on Saturday and Soccer Laduma takes a look at the Tshwane giants’ journey to the final.

Matsatsantsa opened their defending Nedbank Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over National First Division side, Royal Eagles, which saw them progress to the round of 16.
In the round of 16, Coach Baxter’s side recorded a 2-0 win over lower league side, KwaDukuza United, the same side who eliminated Ajax Cape Town from the competition.
In the quarter-finals, Matsatsantsa locked horns with Kaizer Chiefs, an encounter which progressed to extra time and then penalties. SuperSport were victorious on the night, after defeating the Soweto giants 6-4 in a penalty shootout.
Baxter’s side then faced Chippa United in the semi-finals, one step closer to being crowned back-to-back Nedbank Cup champions. The Tshwane giants defeated the Chilli Boys 4-2 in a penalty shootout, progressing to the final of the competition.
The final of the competition took place on Saturday, June 24, which was Head Coach Baxter’s final match at the helm of the Matsatsantsa bench, guiding a side who were eager to defend the Nedbank trophy and give the Englishman a memorable send-off.
The Tshwane giants faced an Orlando Pirates side who were desperate to clinch the trophy after a disappointing 2016/17 season.
However, it was Matsatsantsa who were victorious after the final whistle at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, after thumping the Soweto giants 4-1.
