Stats: How Chiefs Attack Pirates In Derby

In this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, issue 962, Soccer Laduma analysed Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking patterns against Orlando Pirates from the two Soweto giants’ last two Absa Premiership encounters.

An important note to consider in analysis is that William Twala was not part of the Amakhosi set-up in the 3-1 thumping at the hands of the Buccaneers.

The 26-year-old joined the Glamour Boys from Chippa United in the January transfer window.

In the analysis, it suggests that, Chiefs favour attacking down the right-wing, however they do not whip in the crosses from the by-line. This is because Siphiwe Tshabalala does not send the ball in the box with his right foot and rather opts to cut in or shoot.

This explains why 72% of Amakhosi’s shots are taken from outside the box.

In the first derby – the 3-1 thrashing – Twala was not present and the effect was that Chiefs did not swing in a single cross from the right.

The second derby allowed for crosses to be swung in from both sides, with Twala showing an ability to cross from the left and right.

For Chiefs, the attack usually originates on the wings but rarely penetrates the box, so beware of those long shots!

Chiefs have proven dangerous from dead-ball situations. Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho has become a goalscoring machine, particularly from set pieces. The tower stretches high and can hammer in some dangerous headers. Of the 15 goals he’s scored for Amakhosi, 11 have been headers.
