Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund has weighed in on last night’s result from the clash between the two powerhouses of South African football.
After the long wait to play their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match, Sundowns booked a place in the semi-finals of the prestigious competition after defeating Pirates 4-1 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Speaking to the Siya crew, Igesund lauded the quality of Sundowns for their impressive victory while he was also impressed with in-form striker Peter Shalulile.
“I think it was a very deserved win for Sundowns. I think they played very well and more importantly their strike force was excellent. They played with pace, they played with speed and Peter Shalulile was outstanding,” said Igesund.
The former Bafana Bafana coach believes that despite the big score, the Buccaneers were not bad and had their own chances to score more goals.
“Look, the scoreline was 4-1 but it wasn’t that Pirates were bad, I think it was that Sundowns was very good. I’m sure that the coach of Pirates, Josef, will be the first to admit that on the night Sundowns were very good, and I think he will be disappointed with his performance because the scoreline reflected 4-1. But they had opportunities as well to score some goals. I just think that Sundowns thoroughly deserved their victory,” he said.
