Truter Backs Sundowns To Clinch Nedbank Cup

Following their Nedbank Cup exit, Cape Town All Stars coach Brandon Truter hopes Mamelodi Sundowns goes all the way and win the cup.

After giving the Brazilians a few scary moments early on in the second half, Igugu LeKapa surrendered to a Percy Tau strike shortly before the half and hour mark to go down 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium.

“I think we coped well, we went toe-to-toe with them. Coming up against Sundowns was a good motivator for us and you can’t ask for anything more.

“So well done to them and I hope they win the cup,” Truter told SuperSport after the game.

The Capetonians put up a stern showing against a solid Downs side, who rested a few of their regulars such as captain Hlompho Kekana, Ricardo Nascimento and Denis Onyango to mention but a few.

“I think few players did put up their hands and showed their quality. I think all the boys did well. At the end of the day, it was all about construction and organization that’s the way we play.

“I give them freedom of the players and let them enjoy the match. The intensity was very high. Sundowns play at very high intensity,” he said.

Not making use of their few clear-cut chances left Truter dejected and frustrated, as they were made to pay.

“At the end of the day, I think they coped quite well with the conditions. The grass was a bit wet and heavy with the rain coming down.

“But I think up until the 80th minute our legs were gone but we’re still managed to get a chance here and there, with the one-on-one we missed and they went on to score," he added.

“That’s the difference in quality, we missed one and they get one and Percy put it away."
