Benni McCarthy thinks that Percy Tau has all the qualities to be a world-class player.
Tau is currently in illustrious form for Mamelodi Sundowns, having added yet another goal to his tally for the season.
Tau helped the Brazilians to a 2-1 win over Cape Town City yesterday, which saw Sundowns progress through to the next round of the Nedbank Cup competition.
Speaking after the game, the Cape Town City head coach, McCarthy, who shared his thoughts about South African strikers, added that Tau has all the qualities that he needs to go on to be one of the best the country has produced.
“There is some quality out there; I think Percy Tau is one of the best and most intelligent strikers, with all the instincts, with everything a world-class player needs. And he is one that I see that we have and hopefully we can make use and groom that and he will go and help the national team qualify for a World Cup next because I think us qualifying or doing anything special is for players like Percy Tau (to be) unleashed,” McCarthy told the media.
The 40-year-old then went on to add that the Sundowns playmaker can be better than what he was in his playing days, also adding that Tau needs to be more selfish in terms of scoring goals.
“He could probably be better, because I think he has got crazy skill, he is very skilful he is quick, something that I lost as I got older. One thing that I noticed about his game, he needs to be a little bit more selfish as a nine, as a striker, he plays at times too much like a ten and wants to do a lot of assists.
“His assist rate is good, which is what you want, but as a nine, it is judged on goals. Percy Tau has got everything but he needs to add that selfishness to his game where he wants to be the one to score goals,” McCarthy added.
