“Manchester City, the facilities, unbelievable experience,” Benni McCarthy said after returning from Europe where he watched the Premier League giants in action in the Champions League.
The Cape Town City head coach jetted off to the United Kingdom last weekend, as part of his UEFA Pro License course, where he watched arguably one of the best teams in Europe, Manchester City in action in one of the most elite European competitions.
“It was nice to visit and see the different sides, Man City, the facilities, unbelievable experience. We didn’t get to watch the real inside scoop because they played, so they never had a training session, so we couldn’t get to see the genius of Pep (Guardiola) at work, but yeah, I got to see the U21’s which is the feeding team (for the first team) and four of the players who trained ended up playing the evening in the Champions League,” McCarthy told the media today.
McCarthy also revealed that he picked up a lot of things from Manchester City, although, on the day, the Premier League giants suffered a 2-1 loss to Basel.
“It was good to see how these guys apply themselves and now (that I am) back, hopefully, I don’t repeat what they did because it wasn’t a good day (for Man City). Basel ended up going there and breaking that good winning run. So yeah, hopefully, I picked up a couple of tips from Basel.”
Finally, the 40-year-old went on to reveal that, as expected, his side have been questioning him about the type of training sessions conducted by Head Coach Pep Guardiola.
“Now, I came back and everyone wanted to know what they train like at Man City if we can start training like that, so today I am giving them a nice Man City training session (laughs),” McCarthy revealed as he prepares his charges to take on Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup at the Cape Town Stadium tomorrow.
