Benni Explains Rusike’s Reasoning For Coming To Celebrate The Goal With Him
Benni McCarthy Explained The Reason For Matthew Rusike's Goal Celebration
Benni McCarthy has explained why Matthew Rusike’s goal celebration was extra special last night after the newly-signed Cape Town City forward found the back of the net in the early minutes of the encounter.
City claimed a 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits in the first round of the Nedbank Cup competition, with Rusike’s early goal proving to be enough for the Citizens to hold on to until the final whistle.
Rusike, who made his debut for the City since putting pen to paper on January 31, found the back of the net in the second minute of the encounter, where he rushed off to celebrate with his new head coach, McCarthy.
“I just told him to play in between the two centre backs because obviously, the communication, the chemistry isn’t there because they are a, fresh, newly formed pair and I said to Matthew, they are very good defending forward, but once in behind and letting them decide which one is going to pick you up, then you are going to have joy,” McCarthy told the media after the game.
“We tried to put as (many) crosses in because I saw the SuperSport game, the penalty that they conceded was because of the lack of communication between the back three, with Tyson playing on the right and Bongi (Bongani Khumalo) and (Buhle) Mkhwanazi. So, I said to him, just make yourself a nuisance in between of them.
“I think it is also more the fact that I pushed to try and get him on the last day of the transfer window because obviously we had other targets and it basically fell through, so Matty texted me a couple of days before the window closed and that is where it came to life and I realised that he was free so I jumped on it and tried to get him in, so then on the deadline I managed to bring him in. So he feels like the fact that he texted me just out of pure luck that maybe I am interested, now he is playing and he is enjoying himself again, he has the freedom and we make him feel that he is an important part of the team,” he added.
