Bucs Exit MTN8 In Rhulani's First Game In Charge

MTN8

Result: Orlando Pirates 0-1 Highlands Park

Date: 17 August 2019

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates were bundled out of the MTN8 after suffering defeat to Highlands Park in Rhulani Mokwena's first game in charge on Saturday evening.

It's been a hectic week for the Buccaneers who came in to the encounter having suffered back-to-back defeats in all competitions, while head coach Milutin Sredojević resigned late on Friday night.

Pirates had the first decent opportunity of the game in the ninth minute. Augustine Mulenga played the one-two with Thembinkosi Lorch and played in Thabiso Monyane down the right-hand side, who skied the ball over the bar from the angle.

Highlands had their first decent attempt in the 21st minute. Lindokuhle Mbatha got on to the end of a through ball after the Buccanneers were caught on the counter. Mbatha could have passed but went for goal and almost vindicated his decision with his effort going inches wide of the mark.

The Sea Robbers came close in the 35th minute. Musa Nyatama took a quick free-kick and Mulenga played a lovely dinked ball over the top for Lorch, who was clear through on goal but his lobbed effort went narrowly wide of the left-hand upright. Moments later, Lorch brought an excellent save out of Limbikani Mzava at his near post with a fierce effort from an acute angle on the right-hand side.

Soon after that, the Lions of the North broke quickly on the counter-attack through Peter Shalulile with the ball finding its way to Wayde Jooste, whose right-footed shot towards the bottom right-hand corner was brilliantly kept out by Wayne Sandilands.

On the hour mark, Justin Shonga went on a mazy run, dribbling his way past several defenders whilst cutting inside before unleashing an effort at goal, which was saved by the legs of Ngobeni. Soon after, Mulenga played in Lorch down the right-hand side, whose first-time right-footed effort from an acute angle was well kept out at his near post by Ngobeni.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the second half. However, the end-to-end nature of the game made for an entertaining spectacle.

Finally there was some goalmouth action when the Lions of the North scored in the 81st minute. Tendai Ndoro's touch allowed Shalulile to get to the byline on the right-hand side before cutting the ball back across goal for Jooste, who produced a sublime finish even though the delivery was slightly behind him.

That would prove to be the winner and in the end it was a thoroughly deserved victory for the visitors.
