8 MTN8 Heroes Of The Past

The MTN8 final is just a few days away and Soccer Laduma takes a trip down memory lane to look back at the standout players in past finals. 

A number of stars have been celebrated as heroes in previous cup finals; with match-winning strikes, penalty saves or man of the match performances, and we take a look back at individuals who stood out in these iconic clashes. 

2010 - Moroka Swallows 1 Orlando Pirates 1 (Pirates won 4-2 on penalties)

Hero: Daine Klate

In his first final as a Pirates player, Daine Klate was immense. He stepped up to take a penalty during regulation time, as he gave the Buccaneers the lead and was again on target from the spot in the shootout. He was named man of the match.

2011 - Pirates 1 Chiefs 0

Hero: Oupa Manyisa

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder bagged the winning goal in the final played at FNB Stadium. From outside the box, the midfielder netted in extra-time, thanks to some questionable goalkeeping from Amakhosi shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune. 

2014  - Chiefs 1 Pirates 0 

Hero: Tefu Mashamaite

Amakhosi captain Tefu Mashamaite rose highest to head home a set-piece which was whipped in by midfielder George Maluleka. It proved to be the winning goal as Amakhosi held on to beat their Soweto rivals. 

2015 - Ajax Cape Town 1 Chiefs 0

Hero: Nathan Paulse

As one of the experienced campaigners in a young Ajax side, Nathan Paulse stepped up to take a penalty which proved to be the winning goal against Steve Komphela's Kaizer Chiefs side.

2016 - Bidvest Wits 3 Mamelodi Sundowns 0

Hero: Daine Klate

Man of the match, Klate was in sublime form for the Clever Boys against Sundowns, netting a brace and also assisting Eleazar Rodgers. 

2017 - SuperSport United 1 Cape Town City 1 (SuperSport won 4-2 on penalties)

Hero: Ronwen Williams

After they could not be separated in 120 minutes, SuperSport and City needed a penalty shootout. Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero, making two saves to hand his side the title.

2018 - SuperSport 1 City 1 (City won 4-1 on penalties)

Hero: Peter Leeuwenburgh

The former Citizens goalkeeper made two penalty saves during the shootout, denying Bradley Grobler and Reneilwe Letsholonyane to inspire the Cape club to their first MTN8 title.

2019 - SuperSport 1 Highlands Park 0

Hero: Bradley Grobler

Key Matsatsantsa striker Bradley Grobler scored the winning goal which secured his club's second MTN8 title in three seasons. It was Kaitano Tembo's first trophy as SuperSport head coach.

2020 - Bloemfontein Celtic 1 Pirates 2

Hero: Thembinkosi Lorch

After going a goal down early in the match, Pirates bounced back with the equalizer from Deon Hotto and then Thembinkosi Lorch stepped up to take a penalty which ended a six-year trophy drought for the Buccaneers.
