MTN8 2018

Five Big Stats: SSU Aim For Another Trophy

SuperSport United take on Cape Town City this weekend in their seventh cup final in four years and are looking to match a record held only by Orlando Pirates.

Kaitano Tembo has had an impressive start to life as full-time head coach of Matsatsantsa, losing just two of his first nine games as they marched into the final of the MTN8 and to fifth place on the Absa Premiership table.

No team has managed to successfully defend the MTN8 title since the Buccaneers pulled it off in 2011 and 2012, and SuperSport will no doubt be taking aim at equalling that achievement when they go into battle at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The Siya crew looked at some interesting stats as Tembo goes up against Benni McCarthy in Durban, with both sides eager to lift their first trophy of the season after less than 10 games.

  • Last year SuperSport won the MTN8 for the first time in its current format having last won the Top 8 tournament in 2004 when it was the SAA Super Eight. They didn’t win a Top 8 competition at all in almost a decade after they were formed.

  • Kaizer Chiefs have won the most top eight tournaments (15) since 1972, followed by Pirates (9). A SuperSport victory would put them level in joint third place with Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.

  • Since the MTN8 started in its current format in 2008, only Pirates (2010 and 2011) and Chiefs (2008 and 2014) have won it’s twice. SuperSport could become the third team to do so.

  • Having won the SAA Supa Eight in 2004, SuperSport’s Tembo could achieve the feat of having won a Top Eight trophy as both a player and as a head coach.
  • A victory for SuperSport would see them clinch an impressive fifth trophy (1 x Telkom Knockout, 2x Nedbank Cup and 2x MTN8) since 2014, and would certainly put them up there as the PSL’s modern-day Cup Kings.

SuperSport take on City at Moses Mabhida at 19h00 on Saturday night.
