MTN8
Quarter-final
Teams: Maritzburg United v Cape Town City
Date: 12 August 2018
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Maritzburg United and Cape Town City will meet for the first time in a cup competition when they lock horns in an MTN8 quarter-final match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.
The match is scheduled to get underway at 15h00.
Both teams come into this ‘Wafa-Wafa’ match off the back of losses in their midweek Absa Premiership matches.
The Team of Choice suffered a 2-1 loss away to Free State Stars while City lost by the same margin away to Baroka FC.
Maritzburg earned their place in the 11th edition of the ‘Wafa-Wafa’ by finishing fourth on the Absa Premiership log in 2017/18.
The KwaZulu-Natal side were semifinalists in last year’s MTN8, eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarterfinals before succumbing 3-1 on aggregate to eventual champions SuperSport United.
City’s place in this year’s MTN8 was secured with a fifth-place finish in the 2017/18 top flight.
In last year’s competition the side from Cape Town made it to the final, but succumbed in a penalty shoot-out to SuperSport United after the match ended 1-1.
In head-to-head stats, this will be the first cup meeting of Maritzburg and City. The teams have clashed in four league matches since the Cape Town club’s formation at the start of the 2016/17 season. Maritzburg have won two games to City’s one while the other ended in a draw.
