New Signing Sends City Into MTN8 Semi-Finals

MTN8, Quarter-final

Full Time: Maritzburg United 0-1 Cape Town City

Date: 12 August 2018

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

A solitary goal from Keanu Cupido handed Cape Town City a place in the semi-finals of the MTN8 after beating Maritzburg United 1-0 in a quarter-final match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.

It was a slow start to the game with the first shot on goal coming in the 13th minute when Deolin Mekoa let fly from 20-yards out, but his effort shaved the wrong side of the City post.

Seven minutes later some swift build-up play from the Cape Town saw Siphelele Mthembu in space on the edge of the box, but his stinging shot sailed just over the crossbar.

City should have taken the lead on the half hour mark when Ayanda Patosi slipped Mthembu through on goal with a precise pass, but the striker failed to beat the keeper in a one-on-one.

Five minutes later the Cape Town side was on the attack when Roland Putsche met a pin-point left-wing cross from Thabo Nodada, but he headed wide from ten-yards out under no pressure.

On the stroke of half time City took the lead when the United keeper fluffed his punch at a corner-kick, allowing the ball to fall to Keanu Cupido who dully headed home from 12-yards out, 1-0.

Maritzburg started really positively in the second half with substitute Mohau Mokate fining space inside the City box after latching onto a Mekoa cross, but his ten-yard header went agonisingly wide

City quickly tightened up shop at the back after that scare which resulted in the majority of the game taking place in the midfield with neither side really able to take charge.

This resulted in chances on goal being few and far between.

In fact, the next decent effort on goal only came in the 76th minute following a low 20-yard shot from Tlou Masegela, but City keeper Peter Leeuwenburg made a fantastic save diving to his left.

Maritzburg threw players forward in the final ten minutes in search of an equaliser, but City defended well to hold on for the win and a place in the semi-finals of the MTN8.
