Sundowns Cruise Into MTN8 Semi-Finals

MTN8, Quarterfinal

Full Time: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Golden Arrows

Date: 11 August 2018

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns cruised into the semi-finals of the MTN8 after comfortably beating Golden Arrows 2-0 in a quarter-final match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was a rather horrible opening 25 minutes from both teams as they struggled to hold onto possession for sustained periods of play.

Instead, both teams were guilty of giving the ball away cheaply with poor passing and bad decision making in the final third.

The first real shot on goal came in the 24th minute when Arrows’ Danny Venter let fly from long range, but Kennedy Mweene made a good save to deny him.

On the half hour mark Sundowns mustered their first scoring opportunity with a 24-yard volley from Jeremy Brockie, but the Arrows keeper was on hand with a good save.

Sibusiso Vilakazi should have given the Brazilians the lead a minute later when Themba Zwane played him into space 16-yards out, but blazed his effort well-over under no pressure.

Vilakazi made up for that miss with the game’s opening goal in the 40th minute after some superb build-up play from Sundowns concluded with him finding the corner of the net from the edge of the box, 1-0.

Arrows tried to find their way back into the game, but were unable to do so as they entered the half time tunnel trailing by a goal.

The Durban-based side saw a lot of the ball at the start of the second half, but they failed to make use of their possession and created no significant chances on goal.

In fact, the first real opening of the second half fell to Gaston Sirino in the 57th minute but his 16-yard shot shave the wrong side of the Arrows crossbar.

In the 70th minute the Brazilians doubled their lead when Wayne Arendse headed home a pin-point cross from Sirino at close range, 2-0.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after taking a two goal advantage and sailed to a rather easy win.
