Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy admits he is sad to knock Maritzburg United out of the MTN8.
A first-half goal from Keanu Cupido handed City a 1-0 win over United in a MTN8 quarter-final match at the Harry Gwala stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was a nail-biting game from the onset with both teams giving it their all and McCarthy was quick to give praise to his team and his opposition.
“This is what cup finals are all about. Both teams wanted it really badly and it showed,” said McCarthy.
“The fans that came today saw a really entertaining game. Fortunately for us we got one just on the stroke of half time and that made it a little bit easier for us to play.
“But all credit to Maritzburg, they really came out, they were organised and were well disciplined.
“They are a very good playing side. It is a shame that we had to be the ones to knock them out. This is what South African football is all about. Two young coaches, ex players coming back to the game. We drill our teams well. Both teams are good on the ball,” he said.
