Benni McCarthy admits that he didn’t get too excited about winning a penalty shootout, but thinks that he finally has specialists in his team.
The Citizens booked their spot in the final of the 2018 MTN8 competition, after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in a penalty shootout, with their new goalkeeper, Peter Leeuwenburgh stepping up to save the day for City.
However, speaking to the media, McCarthy admitted that winning one penalty shootout is nothing to write home about, but is positive to have the type of players who can specialise on the occasion.
“Don’t be fooled by one penalty taking but I think we have got a good crop, we’ve got specialists in the team, specialising in penalty taking so yeah, the team, the depth is far better than what it was last season,” McCarthy told the media.
City will face off against SuperSport United in the final of the MTN8 competition and the head coach added that his side has done their research on SuperSport up until now.
“Obviously, we have been watching a lot of their games, we watched the Black Leopards game but I think that’s a smoke screen game. I think we’ve mainly just focused on the games we played against them. We have played them four times up till now, so it is more or less the same personnel that’s featured,” McCarthy added.
